Rabat - Morocco has announced that a 135% tariff will be imposed on Morocco's imports of soft wheat for the June-December period, instead of 50% in the first half of the yearThis measure, coinciding with the country's expected record cereals harvest of 10.2 million tons, is meant to shield local farmers from foreign competition, the Moroccan authority underlined, saying that the tariffs will be lowered to 50% as of January 2010.
Regarding durum wheat, 170% tariffs were imposed on this product for the June-July 2009 period.
Some 13.4 million quintals of grains, including 13.1 million quintals of soft wheat, have been harvested up to mid April, according to Morocco's grains agency (the Office national interprofessionnel des céréales et légumineuses - ONICL).
